Onyekachi Wambu presents at the International Decade for the People of African Descent Event

When I speak about harnessing and mobilising diasporas resources for African development, it is within the context of this broader Global Africa – and not always as tragedy, though tragedy and inhuman treatment there is aplenty. My organisation also works on the basis of win-win – so Africa benefits, the diaspora should also see clear benefits.”

Onyekachi Wambu Executive Director, AFFORD gave a keynote speech at the Regional Meeting for Africa on the International Decade for the People of African Descent organised by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in cooperation with the African Union. The meeting was held on 23 and 24 October 2019, in Dakar, Senegal.

In his presentation Onyekachi made a series of recommendations across the areas of history, justice and development, with a focus on things within the power and control of Global Africa to enact, if it so wishes which included: Reducing the costs of remittances in the Africa corridor from a high of 10-12% to the SDG target of 3%; returning of artefacts and human remains from Western institutions and a Global Africa Day of Mourning.
