Apology & Regret Statements | The resolution passed by the house and senate are essentially the same, an apology for Slavery and Jim Crow. It should be noted that the senate’s version excludes a few items from the original house resolution, including the naming of certain injustices in paragraph three. Those are the namings of losses, including the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity. Additionally, the mention of a need for a “genuine apology.” The senate version also changes the last paragraph from expressing the importance of an apology given by the “country” and outlining its “legal” involvement in slavery to “people” who legally recognized slavery under the constitution. Finally, the senate resolution does not include the House’s 1st acknowledgement dealing with the incompatability of slavery to the Declaration of independence. Futher, the senate version adds a disclaimer the resolution does not “authorize or support” claims against the United States and that it does not “[serve] as a settlement of any claim against the United States.” |
