Apology & Regret Statements | Statement details “Charles town” beginning and early economy relying on slave labor. Similar to other statements, it discusses the unconstitionality of slavery, but focuses in on Charlestown’s role within slavery. The statement is centered on slavery and further discrimination subjected to African Americans, and how both topics are intergral to its history. It speaks to how this history should be “embraced, celebrated, and retold.” The Statement pledges to promote equal and fair opportunity for all citizens, Charleston should urge all businesses, institutions, and organizations to promote racial equity in all aspects of African American life, Charleston will promote understanding of African American contribution within all platforms (museums, festivals, etc.), creation of the office of racial reconciliation. |
