Calling all Rwandans in the UK

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has commissioned the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD) to carry out a study about Rwandans and people of Rwandan heritage living in the United Kingdom, which is taking place between May and September 2018.
This forms part of a broader IOM initiative to coordinate studies about Rwandans and people of Rwandan heritage living in the UK, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany for the Government of Rwanda.

The UK study will be conducted by AFFORD and will involve research about Rwandans and people of Rwandan origin living in the UK through surveys, interviews and focus group discussions. The aim of this study is to better understand how Rwandans abroad interact with, and contribute to, Rwanda. For the purposes of this study, Rwandans in the UK include anyone born in Rwanda or whose parents or grandparents are Rwandan.

All responses to this study will be treated in the strictest confidence, and all results will be anonymised.

The findings of the UK study, along with the other three countries, will contribute to a Migration Profile of Rwanda, which is due to be completed at the end of 2018. This will make recommendations to the Government of Rwanda on how Rwandans abroad can be better supported to contribute to Rwanda’s development.

AD3 2018: From Locally Known to Global Brands

AFFORD’s 18th annual African Diaspora & Development Day (AD3) took place on Friday 7th July 2018 at Chatham House: The Royal Institute of International Affairs. This years theme ‘From locally known to global brands – Where are all the global African brands?’ focused on the scalability of African businesses. We would like to say a big thank you to Chatham House, our speakers, guests and all who assisted in making AFFORD’s 18th annual African Diaspora & Development Day (AD3) such a wonderful and interesting event. The line-up for the event included AFFORD Chair, Mr Ade Adaramy and four key speakers: Mr Henry Thompson from Chatham House, Ms Rubelyn Alcantara from Uhusiano Capital, Ms Pumela Salela from Brand South Africa and Mr Paul Asquith from AFFORD.

Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development

 

To celebrate the International Day of Family Remittances, the Central Bank of Malaysia, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Bank Group, hosted a global conference with over 400 participants from the public and private sectors, and the civil society to discuss the issues of remittances, investment and development in the Asian-Pacific region.

Twenty-two panels of experts discussed the current status of remittance flows to Asia-Pacific and proposed policies and mechanisms to lower the transaction costs of migrant remittances, improve market efficiencies and maximise the impact of diaspora contributions for families in communities of origin.

The conference outlined a set of specific actionable plans, which are directly linked to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The five outcomes were structured as the following:

1. Recognize the contributions of migrant remittances and diaspora investments to achieving the SDGs.
2. Expand the collection, analysis and application of remittance- and diaspora-related data to foster effective public policies and private-sector investment, and informed decision-making.
3. Continuously review legal and regulatory frameworks on remittance and diaspora investments to promote coordination across jurisdictions; and ensure that they encourage competition, innovation and productivity, leading to greater market efficiency and lower cost.
4. Support financial involvement and facilitate asset-building in order to leverage the impact of remittances and diaspora investment.
5. Convene the public and private sectors, and the civil society beginning from the local level up to national and international levels, to coordinate and implement strategies, policies and actions, and evaluate efforts on a regular basis.

The findings at the Global Forum on Remittances, Investment and Development are useful for identifying solutions to increase diaspora investment in Africa through remittances. According to the World Bank, Africa has the highest remittance costs in the world, remittances sent by 31 million international African migrants reached nearly $40 billion in 2010, equivalent to 2.6 percent of Africa’s gross GDP, showing the importance of remittances and diaspora investment in Africa and the need to review current remittance procedures.

Short-term Consultant Needed for MADE West Africa

MADE West Africa are currently recruiting a consultant to produce an overview of the implementation of SDGs 8.7, 10.7 and 10.c in the West African context.

MADE West Africa (West Africa – Migration and Development, Partnership for a Governance of Migration and Rights-Based Mobility) is a project funded by the European Commission and was launched by ICMC Europe (International Catholic Migration Commission), AFFORD (African Foundation for Development), the Centre for Migration Studies (University of Ghana) and FORIM (Forum of International Organizations of Migration Issues). MADE West Africa’s general objective is to promote good governance of migration and mobility, as well as the protection of the rights of migrants in the ECOWAS region, in order to increase the benefits of migration and mobility on development.

The selected consultant will produce a 25 page document, which will be easily readable and usable for civil society organisations to develop annual review documents to support advocacy work in West Africa by civil society organisations and more generally the activities of MADE West Africa.

The Diaspora Experience & Mobilisation Manager will be an integral part of the AFFORD team and will work under the direction of the Executive Director. The successful candidate will be someone who has experience of managing a successful start-up project or enterprise.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about the development of the diaspora as active agents of transformation in Africa, and will work actively to mobilise, engage and facilitate their contribution of time, skills and money towards job creation and development in Africa. They must have a keen interest in diaspora philanthropy, investment and skills transfer, and the potential they have in adding significantly to the African social economy. This role will suit a candidate who is self-starting and proactive, has a problem-solving attitude and is interested in building a new sustainable online diaspora business model.

New DEMAC Report: “Creating Opportunities to Work with Diasporas in Humanitarian Settings”

This DEMAC study reviews the work of six diaspora organisations (DOs) in Syria and Somalia. It provides a critical analysis and a case study approach to advance the understanding of diaspora organisations’ contributions in humanitarian settings. This research inquires how small- and medium-scale Diaspora organisations add value in remote and restricted settings where mainstream humanitarian actors face challenges of access, local ownership and sustainability. It concludes on areas of complementarity between DOs and the institutional humanitarian sector, outlining DOs strengths and weaknesses, achievements and areas where they should be supported.

Africa Tech Summit London-16th May 2018

Boko Inyundo was invited, as a member of the Board at AFFORD and a Council member of the Royal African Society as well as a Non-Executive Advisor to the Africa + Tech-focused consultancy De Charles and his business development role aligned to the Technology Sector team at the global law firm DLA Piper, to feature as a panellist at the Africa Tech Summit London which was held on Wednesday 16th May at the Grange St. Paul’s hotel in the City of London.

AFFORD was delighted to support this major annual gathering of +250 African and international tech leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, policy makers, corporate executives and others besides that are driving growth in Africa while this conference provides unrivalled insight into the latest tech trends and developments across this ‘mobile-first continent’. The panel Boko Inyundo participated in included:

Chi Onwurah, both a UK Member of Parliament and elected Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Africa, which the Royal African Society administers, as well as a Chartered Electrical Engineer with over twenty years’ experience introducing new technologies all over the world including in Africa;
Bosun Tijani, CEO and co-Founder of Co-creation Hub, Nigeria’s foremost incubation space for technologists, social entrepreneurs, government, tech companies, impact investors and hackers in and around Lagos (n.b. when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg went to Nigeria in 2016, a meeting with ‘Bosun was his first official engagement in the country);
Emem Rita Usanga, Founder of Bnkability, a platform that helps SME’s become investor ready, and co-Lead at Tech London Advocates Africa.

The panel explored issues relating to the building of an inclusive technology ecosystem in Africa and the evolving role of legislators. In advance of this discussion Boko Inyundo had invited personal contacts that are leading Africa + Tech-focussed industry executives to share their insights on this topic and this, together with his own knowledge of this arena through his pro-bono commitments, formed the basis for the opening remarks Boko Inyundo was asked to make at the event and through which the panel discussion was framed. The interactive event day discussion has also led the organisers of the event to publish this article that Boko Inyundo has authored reflecting on his market analysis, and the panel and audience’s perspectives, on what a mix of stakeholders would need to focus their attention on in order to ensure Africa’s technology ecosystem evolves to most effectively foster more equitable and sustainable economic development.

The article and the event itself provided a valuable opportunity for Boko Inyundo to raise awareness of AFFORD’s role in supporting African Diaspora communities who want to contribute to the development of their home countries and who are increasingly playing a key role in filling the gap in early stage, pre-revenue funding for start-ups. Notably Boko Inyundo reflected on AFFORD’s role in promoting Diaspora investment opportunities for jobs and wealth creation through the recently launched Africa Diaspora Finance (ADF) programme 2016 – 2018 co-funded by Comic Relief and UKAid through the Common Ground Initiative as well as the Noel Buxton Trust and the Pharo Foundation. The ADF has already provided circa £770,000 worth of investment to 31 diaspora enterprises that are solving pressing problems in 8 African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Uganda, Zimbabwe) and it has provided circa £400,000 worth of investment in business support in Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, with almost £200,000 in match-funds invested by diaspora entrepreneurs. The ADF has created 538 jobs while 500 people have received training in new skills across the continent with all the above effectively helping to further enhance Africa’s social economy.
